Here you will find posts related to Mrs. Milurn's Class. Enjoy!
Dear Parent(s),
The Christmas season is upon us! The kids are all very excited for Santa’s visit. The countdown to Christmas is on. The students are all gearing up for an exciting month. Last month was equally exciting as we learned about the lettersCc, Kk, Ee, and Hh about rhyming, reading, Remembrance Day, numbers and bears. We were busy learning the first 2 I-Care Rules. These rules are: We listen to each other and hands are for helping, not hurting. This month we will celebrate the importance of giving rather than receiving. Here is an outline of what we will be doing in December:
Whats New: Now you can read the K Team Blog on the Fairvale website. Go to Fairvale-elementary.nbed.nb.ca .Click on Teachers Icon( websites and Links by Teachers.) Click on Kindergarten Team. Click on Mrs.Milburn on left hand side of page. Enjoy!
Language Arts Grade One: This month we will continue to work on and review vowel sounds, vowel and consonants blends, and word solving strategies.
Kindergarten: This month we will continue to focus on printing skills. Now that we know many of the letter names and sounds, we are able to put these together to make words. New popcorn words for December: the in it
Math: In Math we will be focusing on the numbers to 5. Basically, we will be learning how to make sense of numbers by relating numbers together, in sets, and in patterns. We will also be having a “Math Week” for all of our Kindergarten classes. Each Kindergarten class will have a chance to learn a new Math game/skill with every Kindergarten teacher.
Grade 1: We will continue to explore addition and subtraction facts to12. The students enjoy using mental math strategies to add and subtract. We will continue to practice these skills.
You and Your World: Holidays are our focus this month. The students will be learning about the various traditions during the Christmas season. We will be making some Christmas decorations and creating some seasonal art as well.
Homework: Homework will officially begin in January for the Kindergarten students. Homework in Kindergarten focuses mainly on ROUTINE rather than product. Our goal in Kindergarten is for the children to establish a successful homework routine so that homework becomes an accepted part of the day (just like brushing your teeth). Homework in Kindergarten should take no longer than 10 minutes. The activities are designed to reinforce what we are doing in school, to make that home and school connection to the importance of learning and working at home as well as at school. More information to follow in January.
Items of Interest:
Winter Weather: Please ensure that your child has extra mitts in his/her book bag. When the snow begins to fall, your child will have to wear his/her snow pants to school in the morning as the children are out on the playground for at least 20 minutes each morning.
Christmas Party: We will be having our Christmas party following the Kindergarten Christmas Concert. Mrs. Mc Combe will be calling a few of you for treats. Parents are welcome to take their children home with them after the concert if they wish.
Christmas Concert Kindergarten: Wednesday December 21 12:30 pm As you all know we will be having our Christmas Concert this month. All of the Kindergarten classes are participating and we have begun practicing our songs. We will be singing a few songs together with the other Kindergarten classes and we will be singing a selection of our own. The concert is very exciting for our children. I hope that you are all adjusting your schedules to ensure that you are in the audience for your child’s very first school concert.

November News
November 1st, 2011
Dear Parents,
November is here! Our students are doing a wonderful job in Kindergarten and Grade 1. Last month we learned about Halloween Safety and the I Care Rules. The students are enjoying the playground and making new friends. This month we will be equally as productive. Here is an outline of what we will be doing this month:
Language Arts
Kindergarten: NEW SIGHT WORDS FOR NOVEMBER a see at
We will be engaged in some rhyming activities this month. We will also work on letter recognition, focusing particularly on the names, sounds and actions for Cc, Kk, Ee and Hh. I will be sharing some of the letter activities with you at parent teacher later this month.
Grade1: The grade one students continue to learn new sight words each week. They are reading and writing everyday to practice these sight words. Please keep reviewing these words at home each night. Students should be able to recall the words quickly by sight and not have to sound them out. We are practicing writing skills and learning how to form our letters.
Math
Kindergarten:
We will continue to make sense of numbers this month. The children will explore the concept of number using one-to-one correspondence to compare two sets. We will also focus on counting and creating sets containing 1 to 5 objects.
Grade 1:
We will continue to work on representing numbers to 20. The students will be involved in counting games at school. Try to provide ways at home to play and practice with everyday objects. Ex: count the cans in the grocery bag. How many? Place them on the table. How many now? Talk about number often.
You and Your World: Our focus this month will be on the I-Care Rules. We will discuss the importance of listening to each other and using our hands for helping not for hurting. We will also talk about the importance of Remembrance Day, wearing a poppy, and attending a Remembrance Day ceremony. We will wrap up the month with a short unit on bears.
Items of Interest:
Scholastic Book Orders: It is that time of year when people begin thinking about Christmas. If you would like to purchase books through the Scholastic Book Clubs for your child for Christmas and you want it to be a surprise please put a note in with your order. I will either keep the books for you then call you to make arrangements for you to get the books at school or I can send them home with your child in a sealed envelope.
Winter Weather: Although winter doesn’t officially arrive for another month and a half it will soon feel like winter. It is very important that your child now has a winter hat and a pair of mittens. The students play outside when it is cold, damp and when the snow is falling so it is really important that they are prepared for the weather.

I hope you had a wonderful time trick or treating and enjoying the excitement of Halloween.
